Microsoft’s Teams communications and collaboration platform is getting some AI-powered improvements aimed at boosting audio and video quality on calls.

Among the new features announced Monday include:

  • Echo cancellation, which eliminates echo when someone has their microphone too close to their speaker;
  • “De-reverberation,” which helps improve shallow audio sounds for poor room acoustics;
  • Real-time screen optimization for video playback;
  • Brightness and soft focus video enhancement

Microsoft detailed the updates in a blog post.

Last month Microsoft unveiled new remote collaboration technology to let users interact with apps simultaneously during Microsoft Teams meetings.

Microsoft Teams surpassed 270 million monthly active users in the December quarter, continuing to add users but at a much slower pace than in the initial months of the pandemic.

Teams competes with services including Slack, acquired by Salesforce last year for $27.7 billion, and the widely used Zoom video conferencing service. Microsoft launched a standalone version of Teams for small businesses in December, separate from other Office apps and services, posing a more direct threat to Zoom.
