Well, that got blown out of proportion.

A video of a cloud forming over Mount Rainier on Wednesday morning elicited cries of the coming apocalypse, or worse, an end to the Seattle Mariners’ playoff hopes.

But the video shared on Twitter by KOMO meteorologist Kristin Clark was not an impending eruption, or even venting, at Washington state’s most famous volcano. Various government agencies stepped in — in all caps at times — to assure residents that Mount Rainier was NOT erupting.

“Phew,” Clark later tweeted after the The United States Geological Survey replied from its @USGSVolcanoes account that the activity at the mountain was not unusual.

The prospect of Rainier blowing its top or even just letting off some steam was enough to get Pacific Northwest residents fired up Wednesday morning. Some called it scary and others wondered whether venting was a normal process for the volcano.

Others couldn’t help but find the timing especially troubling if it meant that wiping out part of the state would also wipe out the Mariners’ promising baseball season. The team’s social media handler even tweaked @MountRainierNPS’s tweet to credit catcher Cal Raleigh’s home runs for any seismic activity concerns.

But Seattle Seahawks fans already concerned about prospects for that coming season, said the mountain was mad at the team.

Volcanoes! Sports! What a gas.

Along with the USGS, the official Mount Rainier National Park Twitter feed finally relieved the pressure over any venting or eruption talk with a tweet at 10:28 a.m. PT saying that Rainier was not erupting, and again at 10:47 a.m. saying that a lenticular cloud was forming above the mountain.

The National Park Service also issued a news release about the geological weather event, saying that “lenticular clouds are often formed when moist air is pushed up and over the top of a mountain, forming a disc shaped cloud. … In this case, it is likely related to a passing weather front.”

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, which monitors earthquakes and volcanoes in Washington and Oregon, also tweeted that there had been no “unusual signals” at Rainier and “had there been an explosion, the seismic and infrasound network would have shown evidence for that.”

The Washington Emergency Management Division, which coordinates state response to such things as volcanic disasters, jumped at the opportunity to remind residents that Mount Rainier is one of five active volcanoes in the state. In its own tweets, the agency pointed people to more facts about those volcanoes, and how to be prepared in the event of an eruption — September is, coincidentally, Preparedness Month.

And, because it’s Twitter, WaEMD took all the talk of clouds and threw some shade, on behalf of Mount St. Helen’s.
